Hot, lazy days of summer are always one of my favorite times to enjoy a good book, whether it be fiction or nonfiction. The heat sometimes limits what we can do outside and when; we may instead sip a cool drink in the shade while absorbing an enticing book. Another pleasure is attending public readings of authors’ works.
Redwood Writers Branch of the California Writers Club hosts once a month Open Mic readings at SoCo Coffee in Santa Rosa. RW features selected readers at these public readings and then presents a slate of open mic readers. The featured readers for the August 24th date included both the current, and a past president of Redwood Writers. It wasn’t planned that way; it just happened! And a pleasing plan it proved to be.
Redwood Writers Past President Linda McCabe was a featured reader at the August 24th RW Open Mic. (Held the fourth Saturday of every month from 2-4 p.m.) McCabe has an exquisite, theatrically soothing voice when she reads from her novel Quest of the Warrior Maiden, an historical novel with a touch of fantasy, set in the time of Charlemagne. She manages to convey the ‘historical feel’ through the story’s language without sounding overly dramatic. Currently, she is working on her second novel in the series. http://www.lindacmccabe.com/file/Welcome.html
Robbi Sommers Bryant was the second featured reader of the day on August 24th at the RW Open Mic. She read from her work-in-progress psych thriller, which zinged the audience with goosebumps while imagining the protagonist’s actions. Brrrr! Bryant currently serves as President of Redwood Writers, the largest CWC branch in the state of California. Bryant has written several books including fiction and short stories. A multiple award winner, her most recent novel is Dream, was a runner-up at the 2012-13 Los Angeles Book Festival. http://www.robbibryant.com/BOOKS–DREAM.html
After each month’s featured readers, the RW Open Mic highlights those who signed up that day for a five minute time slot for their poems or writing. A great variety of readings may be presented for the appreciative audience; we’ve even had an author from South Carolina join us, and appreciated a seven-year-old who read for us one month. All the RW Open Mic events are open to anyone, whether a member of Redwood Writers or not.
Join us next month! We meet the 4th Saturday every month from 2-4 p.m. at SoCo Coffee in Santa Rosa, CA. (Next date September 28th.)

Thank you, Arletta! It’s always a pleasure to hear you read too. It’s been enlightening to hear bits of your three novels as they develop and find their voices. Keep it up!
