Writing Lesson or Riding Lesson?

Writing or riding with Thonie:

Thonie Hevron's avatarThonie Hevron Author

At long last, INTENT TO HOLD is “finished”. Still lots to do: edits, queries, cover art, contest submissions and so on. But I was able to scrape enough time together (okay, I passed on a paddle down the Petaluma River with my hubby) to ride my horse yesterday.

On St. Patrick’s Day this past March, my old boy turned 30. That’s not an extremely advanced age but it makes him quite the senior equine citizen around the ranch. Casey (his registered name if Patrick O’Zeem) is a big, old dark bay (dark brown) Thoroughbred gelding. He has the heart of a saint and an incredible work ethic. My hubby calls him “Chester” because he’s a horse nerd—he just keeps going and going. He loves to trot but his favorite is a good canter.

Yesterday, we were plodding around in an arena. I settled into the saddle, consciously thinking about…

Illustrations Can Be Cartoony: Amanda Baker

writersandy's avatarGarden Plots . . .

Do you want to find an illustrator, editor, publisher, or agent? Attend  the meetings of professional associations and clubs, salons, open mics, workshops and conferences. That’s how I found the illustrator for my second kid Amanda Bakergardening book, Zack’s Zany Zucchiniland: Amanda Baker. I first met her at a local SCBWI meeting and then later found her website. We chatted, I told her about my Zack manuscript, she did concept sketches for me, and I hired her. I’d seen appealing artwork of several other potential illustrators, but I liked her ideas about several especially difficult-to-illustrate pages (at least in my mind).  She nailed them! Red-headed Zack is a likable lad with a devilish streak. By golly, he didn’t want to dig in the dirt with his parents. He was bored and decided he must have a garden that was all his.

Sometimes life hands you a big present. For the past three days I have been in Dripping Springs, Texas, attending a trick training class at Red Horse Ranch. Allen Pogue, Sue De Laurentis and Kristi Unsell instructed more than 15 students in the basics of trick training, a discipline not just for performance but also to create a wonderful companion animal that will be fun to be with even after the horse becomes too old to ride. Trick training is a means of increasing the intelligence, adaptability, and desire of the horse to interact with us.
I may not be teaching Minnow to lay down this week but he will learn to smile and retrieve a ball. Best of all this training encourages communication and a desire to interact with me.
A horse that desires my company is like waking up to Christmas morning every day. Icing on the cake…

More Hot Summer Readings

Hot, lazy days of summer are always one of my favorite times to enjoy a good book, whether it be fiction or nonfiction. The heat sometimes limits what we can do outside and when; we may instead sip a cool drink in the shade while absorbing an enticing book. Another pleasure is attending public readings of authors’ works.

Redwood Writers Branch of the California Writers Club hosts once a month Open Mic readings at SoCo Coffee in Santa Rosa. RW features selected readers at these public  readings and then presents a slate of open mic readers.  The featured readers for the August 24th date included both the current, and a past president of Redwood Writers. It wasn’t planned that way; it just happened!  And a pleasing plan it proved to be.

Redwood Writers Past President Linda McCabe was a featured reader at the August 24th RW Open Mic. (Held the fourth Saturday of every month from 2-4 p.m.) McCabe has an exquisite, theatrically soothing voice when she reads from her novel Quest of the Warrior Maiden, an historical novel with a touch of fantasy, set in the time of Charlemagne. She manages to convey the ‘historical feel’ through the story’s language without sounding overly dramatic. Currently, she is working on her second novel in the series. http://www.lindacmccabe.com/file/Welcome.htmlLindaMcC Aug13LindaMcCabeCover2

Robbi Sommers Bryant was the second featured reader of the day on August 24th at the RW Open Mic. She read from her work-in-progress psych thriller, which zinged the audience with goosebumps while imagining the protagonist’s actions. Brrrr! Bryant currently serves as President of  Redwood Writers, the largest CWC branch in the state of California. Bryant has written several books including fiction and short stories. A multiple award winner, her most recent novel is Dream, was a runner-up at the 2012-13 Los Angeles Book Festival.  http://www.robbibryant.com/BOOKS–DREAM.html

After each month’s featured readers, the RW Open Mic  highlights those who signed up that day for a five minute time slot for their poems or writing. A great variety of readings may be presented for the appreciative audience; we’ve even had an author from South Carolina join us, and appreciated a seven-year-old who read for us one month.  All the RW Open Mic events are open to anyone, whether a member of Redwood Writers or not.

Join us next month! We meet  the 4th Saturday every month from 2-4 p.m. at SoCo Coffee in Santa Rosa, CA. (Next date September 28th.)
