A wise 13 year old!
The only place you find success before work is the dictionary.
May Smith
My favorite 13 year old has this quote up on the wall of her room. When I go into her room and read the saying, I smile knowing that I have mentored her well. This quote is likely the reason that she set the school’s Junior High Cross Country record this fall.
One of the most important life lessons that competitive swimming taught me was to be enthralled with the work that was necessary for success. While winning was awesome, I learned that true success was realized in the journey.
I transitioned from being a competitive athlete to a recreational athlete almost two decades ago, but I still believe in the value of the journey. Today it is a journey of safe food production rather than qualification for the elusive US Swimming Senior Nationals, but my…

Open Mic Featured Poet
At the October 27th Open Mic reading hosted by Redwood Writers, poet Juanita J. Martin was our featured reader. Juanita read from her new book of poetry The Lighthouse Beckons. Juanita is a multitalented writer who often does freelance work, but her poetry is where her talent shines. She has won numerous awards for her poetry and became the Fairfield’s first poet laureate, 2010-2012. Her poetry has been featured in Blue Collar Review, SoMa Literary Review, Rattlesnake Review and the Bay Area Poets Review. She is a member of the Ina Coolbrith Circle, Redwood Writers branch of the California Writers Club, Marin Poetry Center and Benecia First Tuesday Poets. Juanita is also a poetry slam champion. Juanita served over four years on the Board of Directors for the Redwood Writers, in many capacities giving her time and energy to the organization. She continues to support them as the Poetry Editor of their popular newsletter, The Redwood Writer.
I hope you’re soon blessed with hearing Juanita’s powerful poetry in person, or at least able to read some of her work. In her book she expressed grateful acknowledgement to Al Young, California Poet Laureate 2005-2008, for his words of praise. She also thanked Redwood Writers for their professional relationships and friendships.

Go West for NaNoWriMo
I’m not sure how it happened but when I sat down at my keyboard this year to jump into the National Novel Writing Month frenzy, a “western” started galloping out of my head. Go figure. I sat down to add to my horse series for middle grades students and instead a western emerged. Since it’s corraled in my head let’s work that western theme. I’ll post some of my reviews of western novels. Here’s the first:
Kansas Kid by Lauran Paine
I picked up a book from the Sonoma County Library called Kansas Kid, written by Lauran Paine. There’s a second story by Paine in the volumne titled Border Dawn. I enjoyed Kansas Kid, and will read the second story later. Paine’s bio says he wrote over 1,000 books under his own name and various pseudonyms. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and worked with livestock, rodeos and even motion pictures where he served as an extra because of his expert horsemanship. I’m not sure during which years he completed these stories, but Kansas Kid was published in 2010.
Kansas Kid is thrown in jail for killing the man who drew on him first in front of the saloon as witnessed by several people. It turns out the thug who was sent to kill Kansas Kid was sent by….. I won’t tell you. The bulk of the story is about how Race Dunphy, owner of the saloon, tries to sort out the mystery of the connection between Kansas Kid and Earnest Franklyn, the wealthy owner of the Bear Trap Ranch. Dunphy is puzzled why neither of the two men will talk. Franklyn threatens to close the saloon if Dunphy won’t do it himself. I found this to be a good western themed mystery. Author Lauran Paine has done a credible job with his western details, character and plot. —Robin Moore

Life With Horses: Trail Riding
Yee haw! SADDLE UP! It’s time to get your entries in for the June Ride! Entries MUST BE POSTMARKED by tomorrow, May 25th!!! We NEED more people who’re RIDING. Send me a personal message w/ your email & I can email you an entry. (Sorry, we do NOT supply the horses.)
What is it that pulls at the soul to saddle up and ride in the hills on a good horse? There is a universal peacefulness that appeals to those who ride. We all know that old quote from Churchill, “There’s something about the outside of a horse that’s good for the inside of a man,” or in many cases, a woman.
AdaMae Rege was one of the founding members of the Redwood Empire Trail Riders which has been around since 1978. The club was founded by former members of the Cloverdale Riding Club, who disbanded when they lost access to their club arena (on private land.) RETR’s annual June trail ride is now dedicated to her memory in honor of all enthusiasm she had for trail riding, and for her work to support the club. She truly loved trail riding. I think we all remember her riding her bay quarter horse, Tonto.
Let’s honor AdaMae again by turning out for this 34th annual June ride, the weekend of the 8th through the 10th. She’ll be smiling down on us.
